As we gathered in the courtyard of the hotel for our tour we saw a couple of other hotel guests with these great t-shirts. We need to find some for us.
Our driver dropped us off to start our walking tour near the Ismoil Samonty Mausoleum. This one looks a lot different from many of the others. It is tall and a cube in shape and is made entirely of bricks…no colorful tiles.
However, the bricks are arranged in great patterns that give the interior and exterior a lot of interest.

There were groups of art students near the mausoleum doing drawings of the building.
What an interesting, old city. Beautiful buildings and monuments wherever you look, public art and interesting shops on our walking tour.
One shop had more pee pipes with the cradles and very lovely baby blankets. Too fancy for most babies.
We saw several craftsmen making engravings on copper and bronze pieces.

We visited the History of Water Supply Museum that is housed in the Chashma-Ayub Mausoleums, built in the late 1300’s. It is also the site of a source of cold water that is believed to be both healing and sacred.
There were exhibit of leather skins used to carry water and tile pipes that distributed water in the city.
Right across from the water museum was the Complex
of Imam Al Bukhari. We didn’t visit that
but it was very interesting architecturally.
We drove by a section of the old city wall surtounding the Ark of Bukara…
and stopped by the House of 40 Columns. This mosque had 20 columns in the front, and they were all reflected in the pond in front of the building. So 20 on the building and 20 in the water for 40 columns.
Nearby was an old Soviet era water tower that has been converted into a viewing tower. We didn’t go up.
Across the street was the Ark of Bukhara. The location has been in use since the 5th Century AD.
One of the buildings inside the complex was the Jome
Royal Mosque. It is no longer a mosque
but a calligraphy museum.
There was a large outdoor throne hall.

and headed off to our next stop…the Poi Kalon Complex.
There we visited the Kosh Madrassah,
Minaret Kalyan,
Kalyan Mosque,
and also visited several bazaars.
Our little group at the mosque.
The ladies in the group stopped in at an embroidery shop the specializes in gold embroidery although they no longer use real gold thread. Regardless, the work was beautiful. Didn't buy any because we would have no place to put it or wear it.
We saw the remains of a bath house,
the Maghoki Attori Mosque
and the Char Minar Mosque.
